The main purpose of channels is to force the water along the hull which provides extra lift and early planing. You can also add more vee within the channels to obtain more high end control. Channels also provides better grip which will give the board better upwind performance and make it possible to use smaller fins.
Channels – An opportunity to have different rocker curves
Channels provides the opportunity to have different rocker curves in the channel compared to the outer edge. Straighter rocker curve in the channel provides early planing while a accentuated rocker curve on the outer edge gives better maneuver ability.
