Windsurfing fins – Buyers guide and fin selectors

In previous articles on windsurfing fins we have gone through how to choose the right windsurfing fin and the advantages of going from a one fin windsurfing quiver to add at least one or two extra fins to obtain enhanced performance and control.

Fin producers with consumer friendly approach

One of the biggest challanges when it comes to windsurfing fins is to deside which fin to choose and what sizes you would opt for. Here we will focus on fin brands that not only delivers top of the line fins but also offers consumer friendly information, guides and support to help you with your choice.

Windsurfing fins – Question & Answers

Are you satisfied with you current stock fin? If so; How do I combine two new fins with the stock fin? If I go for three new fins, which sizes would I opt for considering board size, sail sizes, body weight and sailing conditions?

You will find most of the answers you need on the fin producers website but always check your choice of fins with their customer support. Our experience is that if you give the fin producer info about your windsurfing quiver such as board-brand/model/size, sails-brands/models sizes and your body weight they will deliver a very precise recommendation regarding your choice of fins.

Sonntag Custom Carbon Fins – Specialized on custom fins

Fin selectors and Customer friendly supportFocus: Speed, Slalom and Formula racing
Example of Team riders: Zara Davis – Speed Championship 2015 and Adriaan van Rijsselberghe – Netherlands Slalom Champion 2015

Sonntag Fins is specialized on custom fins that are tuned and customized after the customer’s individual requirements and needs. The proposal form is quite comprehensive and their answer is very detailed, recommending a fin quiver according to your weight, height and your sail and board combo. Their slalom fin SL-P_r3 is developed to provide “easy racing” characteristics as well as hardcore slalom performance. >> Check out Sonntag Custom Fins – About windsurfing fins section.

Black Project Fins – A wide range of premium fins

Windsurfing Black Project Fins

“The Type R and Type RS fins will help to tune your iSonic into a race winning machine. Heaver riders or those who sail with lots of back foot pressure should choose the Type R for more drive and grip. For riders concentrating on pure downwind slalom (or speed) the Type RS has a looser feel and has a higher top end speed. Riders sailing close to the wind and/or on a figure 8 course should choose the Type R. **107, 110, 117 & 130 should use Deep Tuttle bases, however regular Tuttle can be used with longer bolts.”

Focus: High performance fins regardless windsurfing discipline
Example of Team riders: Jurjen Van Der Noord – Speed 51.26 knots, ranked no 3 in the world and Morgan Noireaux – Winner PWA Aloha Classic 2014 and 2015.

Black Project Fins have customer friendly guides and loads of information on how to choose the right windsurfing fin. We have been on Black Project’s slalom fin Type R for two years now. Take a few moments to read the review on the Black Project Type R here on Boardtests. Just recently Black Project Fins have released their all new down wind slalom fin Sabre GT and their follow up on the awesome Type R slalom fin: Hammer GT. >> Check out Black Project Fins – How to choose the right slalom Fin

Select Hydrofoils – The pioneer when it comes to fin selectors

Windsurfing Fin Select HydrofoilsFocus: Wide range of fins built with the most advanced production line on the market.
Select Hydrofoils was one of the pioneers when it comes to customer friendly fin selectors, possibly one of the factors that have established Select Hydrofoils as one of the dominating fin producer on the market. Their V-MAX 3.0 is a full on slalom fin but Select states that the V-MAX is just as suitable for freeride and freerace. >> Check out Select Hydrofoils fin selector.

One or two extra fins in your windsurfing quiver will boost you overall performance

Regardless if you are into freeride, freerace or slalom, one or two extra fins will improve the wind range of your one board quiver massively and at the same time boost your overall performance.
